Meningitis Centre Australia (MCA) is calling on the WA Government to urgently fund free Meningococcal B (Men B) vaccines for all babies and teens.

Men B is a deadly, fast-moving disease that can kill within 24 hours or cause permanent disability. It's preventable with a vaccine — but right now, WA families must pay hundreds of dollars out of pocket for it. Dear Minister Winton,

“My only regret and deepest regret is that I didn’t find the money sooner to pay for this needle, it’s hard with the cost of living going up and up and a family of 4 children!  But at least you gave me that magnet and made me aware and that was enough to save his life.  Question is, like many parents what if I hadn’t known, what if I hadn’t had that magnet, why did my son get a disease that he could have been vaccinated against at school, why are we not told that they’re not immunised against all of the types of meningococcal at school when they get the meningococcal vaccine, why are we told its rare, and why is the government not suppling the Meningococcal B vaccination when we have cases here in WA.  I know you are trying to get it in in WA, don’t give up because it happens and shatters your life.  There is nothing worse than not knowing if your child will survive, sitting by their hospital bed wishing you had found the money somehow to make this not happen, to know that you could have made this not happen” Carla (Mum)

I do not want this regret, and I call on your government to ensure every WA baby and teen is provided with the Meningococcal B Vaccine through the state immunisation plan.  No parent should ever have to face the vaccine preventable Meningococcal B

Cases are rising, and so many parents in the WA community want to protect their children, but simply can’t afford to with the current cost of living crisis.  No parent should have to choose between protecting their child through vaccination and food on the table.  Life saving vaccination should not be based on postcode or income.

All the teens and babies across our borders are protected by their state government, but not our own.

1 in 10 will die who contract Meningococcal, 1 in 4 are impacted with a lifetime disabilities.  Meningococcal B not only impacts families but WA communities.  Your Health department uses the word ‘rare’ – it’s rare until it happens to you and your life is shattered.  I want no family or community shattered, vaccines should be in arms protecting our kids, not sitting on shelves.

I call on you as the Preventative Health Minister, our Premier and our Health Minister to place Meningococcal B on the state Immunisation program, right here, right now to protect our Babies and Teens before there are any more cases, deaths or disability in WA – every second counts!
